Relay server move and change of IP address

The relay server will move from the United States to the United Kingdom on 11 December at 19:00 UTC. This will move it closer to most of the clients who use it, making it faster to access.

There are three important points to note:

Due to new anti-spam and -virus measures on the new relay server, email must be submitted to port 587. Submissions to port 25 (the default SMTP port) will be blocked. Please see Configure your Email Account to Use the Relay Server for instructions on reconfiguring your email account on and after Saturday.
The address of the relay server (relay.niner.net) will remain the same.
Some people using firewalls may need to allow the new IP address, which is 178.79.145.43. We suggest that you allow both the old and new IP addresses effective immediately until about 21 December to ensure a smooth transition back to the old IP address in the event of any problems with the new server.

Hardware upgrade on server NC018

To improve the performance of server NC018 and to address recent issues with this server, we will be adding more RAM to the server during our weekly maintenance window this weekend.

Server NC018 will be taken offline at approximately 19:00 UTC on Saturday, 4 September during this process, and will be offline for 30-45 minutes.

During this time, any inbound email destined for your account will be held on the sending mail servers until server NC018 is online again, at which time it will be delivered. No email will be lost.

Implemented blocklists on server NC020

As part of the ongoing reconfiguration of the relay and secondary mail servers on server NC020, we’ve implemented use of blocklists — the same blocklists that have been in use on server NC018 for several years. As expected, we’re already seeing a pay-off from this, with spam being rejected.

This implementation of the blocklists should not result in clients using the relay server being blocked, even if their IP address appears in the blocklists we’re using. However, if you use the relay server to send email and should you experience any problems trying to do so, please contact NinerNet support immediately.
