The cause of the problem with NC020 was a website that overwhelmed the MySQL database server, causing the server to kill MySQL and run out of memory. As a result, although the server was technically “running”, all processes failed and no connections could be made to the server. A hard reboot brought the server back online.
The problem with the website in question is being addressed, and this shouldn’t happen again.
It should be noted that server NC020 is a secondary server, generally for specialised projects and functions, and this incident affected almost none of our clients.
We’re looking into the cause of this problem and will have a report later today.
Server NC020 is apparently offline at the moment. We are looking into this and will report details here as soon as they are available.
Having monitored the operation of new server NC020 for several days now, it has been declared 100% operational. Please let us know if you have any issues or feedback. Thanks very much.
The relay mail server is back online on the new server — NC020. Mail is flowing again.
Having been in operation since June 2003, server NC017 in Vancouver was shut down today.
Some services have not yet been fully migrated to server NC020 just yet. We’re working on those right now and everything should be working within the next few hours.
The mail relay (relay.niner.net) will be switched back to server NC017 from server NC020 at 16:00 UTC (18:00 CAT, 09:00 Pacific) while server NC020 is rebuilt prior to its being pressed into full service.
This should not have a substantial effect on anybody.
This blog is officially live and we’ve redirected all links to old status pages here. We still have a few features that need to be activated, most importantly commenting, but these will be completed soon. We also intend to expand the scope of this blog to cover specific services — e.g., web servers, mail servers, webmail, domain registration and management, etc. — in addition to the servers themselves.
We’ve also set up accounts with Twitter and Identi.ca to make following status updates easier for people who use those services. While we usually develop and host our services in-house, using third-party services such as these will also allow us to communicate with you should something catastrophic happen to our own infrastructure. Keep in mind that, by their very nature, updates on Twitter and Identi.ca will be sparse and infrequent.
Once we get the commenting system working, we’d be happy to have your feedback. Comments on posts are automatically closed after fourteen days, but you can always contact us through the main website at www.niner.net/go/contact.
Thanks for your time.
Secondary server NC017 will be shut down on April 30th and replaced with server NC020. Our mail relay (relay.niner.net) has already been switched to that server, and other services will be switched over the next week or so.
Further updates will be posted here, and anyone with services on server NC017 will receive email notifications.
