Email maintenance: Update 2

30 September 2013 15:34:00 +0000

This maintenance continued through the weekend, but was not completed due to significant obstacles. At no time was the main mail server shut down.

We will attempt to finish addressing the obstacles today and aim to finish the maintenance early on Tuesday morning UTC. During that time the main mail server will need to be shut down, but we anticipate that this shut-down should not last as long as we had initially anticipated.

Email maintenance: Update 1

29 September 2013 01:15:51 +0000

This maintenance has started. However, we will not shut down the mail on the primary server until it is necessary to do so. We’ll post an update here when we do.

Email maintenance this weekend

27 September 2013 22:07:13 +0000

On Sunday, 29 September at 01:00 UTC, we will be performing some extensive maintenance of our email systems. This will necessitate shutting down the primary mail server for a period of time, probably for around two to three hours. Within 24 hours of the start of the maintenance, we will conduct a test that should give us a better idea of the amount of time needed.

During the shut-down the following services will be affected:

  • No new email will arrive in your email account, and
  • You will not be able to send email.

The following services will not be affected:

  • Websites will remain online,
  • You will still be able to log into your email account, and
  • If you host your email on a self-hosted server (i.e., you only have a web hosting associated with your account), your email will function as normal, as it’s not involved in this maintenance.

During the maintenance, any email sent to addresses on your domain will be queued on the senders’ mail servers. Once the maintenance is over, this email will be delivered to your account. No email will be lost.

This maintenance is necessary to improve your email service, and we thank you for your patience. Updates will be posted here leading up to, during and following the maintenance. Please inform colleagues, employees and anybody else using email on your domain.

If you have any questions, please contact support and we’ll be happy to assist. During the maintenance, email on the niner.net domain will also be affected, so we ask that if you need to contact us during that time, please either use the contact form on our website, or send email to:

support-september-2013@ninernet.com

To convert the time of this maintenance to your time zone, please use the World Time Server.

Thank-you.

SMTP on server NC018 restarted

27 July 2012 22:20:51 +0000

We’ve cleaned up the spam and restarted SMTP on server NC018 at 22:13 UTC. You can now send email again.

We continue to work against the spam, and are escalating the defences. We’ve seen a huge increase in spam the last couple of days from multiple sources, including from throwaway domains registered through a single, reputable registrar. Once we determine the IP addresses of that registrar’s mail servers, we’ll be blocking them until they stop hosting and doing business with spammers.

Once again we apologise for the inconvenience.

SMTP on NC018 shut down

27 July 2012 21:39:27 +0000

We are once again dealing with a spam problem on NC018 and have shut down the SMTP server. This means that you will not be able to send email for now. We are working on this issue as fast as we can.

SMTP on server NC018 restarted

26 July 2012 18:58:12 +0000

SMTP (the outgoing mail server) on NC018 was restarted at 18:20 UTC after the spam problem was cleaned up. We apologise again for the inconvenience.

SMTP on server NC018 down

26 July 2012 16:55:14 +0000

We have temporarily stopped SMTP on server NC018 while we clean up a spam issue. This means that most of our clients will not be able to send email through their own server.

We’re actively working on this issue and will restart SMTP as soon as possible, and post an update here.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

DNS issue at server NC018 data centre

16 November 2011 07:53:49 +0000

At approximately 04:24 UTC on 16 November, the data centre where server NC018 is located apparently experienced some issues with their DNS servers. At the moment we’ve only had one report from automated systems of a brief issue with SMTP on the server, but this was quickly cleared. There have been no further reports, and we’ve received no reports from clients related to this issue.
