NC020: Server networking issues

17 December 2017 12:27:45 +0000

Due to a misconfiguration of server NC020 by data centre personnel in response to a networking request from NinerNet that resulted from a change in one of their policies, this server stopped processing email properly earlier today. This resulted in some instability and the rebooting of the server three times between 07:22 and 08:06 UTC.

These problems affected only email processed for NinerNet domains, not any client email. However, because there are still a few client websites hosted on this server, including this status blog, these sites would have been down and up for some time this morning.

We have corrected the networking issue and have remonstrated with the data centre over the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will endeavour to ensure that this does not happen again.

NC031: Database restarted

16 October 2017 21:30:51 +0000

The database on server NC031 was restarted at 21:25 UTC and is online and working again. We are investigating the cause of this issue.

NC031: Database issues

16 October 2017 21:03:09 +0000

We are investigating a database issue on server NC031 that is affecting database-driven websites. We will report details here.

NC031: Maintenance complete

7 September 2017 03:00:58 +0000

Work to increase the RAM on server NC031 has completed successfully.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Thank-you for your patience.

NC031: Maintenance update 1

7 September 2017 02:34:00 +0000

Work on the server upgrade started at 02:30.

NC031: Emergency server maintenance

7 September 2017 00:18:40 +0000

We will be performing emergency maintenance on server NC031 within the next couple of hours — starting at 02:30 UTC, 7 September 2017 — to increase the RAM (memory) in the server so that it can handle increasing load. During this time the server will be offline, and most client websites will be unavailable.

Email will be unaffected.

Normally we would try to schedule this kind of maintenance during our regular maintenance window on the weekend, but circumstances dictate that we do this maintenance immediately. We apologise for the inconvenience to you. We expect this maintenance to take less than two hours. Please use WorldTimeServer to convert the time of the maintenance to your time zone.

Please note that our own website (www.niner.net) will also be down during this time. Please check for updates here at status.niner.net.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank-you.

Migration of websites

17 July 2017 07:36:44 +0000

We are moving the remaining websites on server NC018 to server NC031. This will result in automated emails with important configuration information going out to the designated contact for each domain. Please save these emails for future reference.

If you have any questions, please contact us. Our own website will also be moving, so if you have trouble with our contact form please email us at migration201707@niner.net. Thank-you.

Chromium certificate issue resolved

17 November 2016 20:08:44 +0000

The issue with the Google Chromium web browser reporting valid certificates as “unsafe” has been resolved today with an update to Chromium.

Update, 2016-11-20: We’ve posted a commentary about this on our blog.

Issues with *.niner.net certificate

16 November 2016 10:34:52 +0000

We are aware that s small subset of users of the Chromium web browser may receive the following error when trying to access websites and control panels via HTTPS that use the *.niner.net certificate:

Your connection is not private

Attackers might be trying to steal your information from cp31.niner.net (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards). NET::ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED

(cp31.niner.net will be replaced by whatever domain you are trying to access.)

If you click the “ADVANCED” link you will see the following additional information:

The server presented a certificate that was not publicly disclosed using the Certificate Transparency policy. This is a requirement for some certificates, to ensure that they are trustworthy and protect against attackers.

This is a bug in Google Chromium, not a problem with our certificate.

Until Google fixes this bug we recommend using a better web browser (e.g., Firefox), or clicking the “Proceed to cp31.niner.net (unsafe)” link that is revealed when you click “ADVANCED” as described above. Clicking the “unsafe” link is indeed safe in this case. Even very big and very busy websites — such as Yahoo and Flickr for example — are currently affected by this bug.

NC031 upgrade complete

16 July 2016 23:28:00 +0000

The upgrade of server NC031 was completed at 23:16 UTC, and the server is up and running. Thanks for your patience.

In light of this much faster upgrade we’re going to suggest that the bigger upgrade of server NC027 next weekend shouldn’t take nearly as long as is currently scheduled.
